Welcome to the Aiken SPCA
Established in 1935, the Aiken SPCA has placed thousands of needy animals into loving homes. This success was achieved through the dedicated efforts of numerous Aiken SPCA employees and volunteers. It also hinges upon commitment, support and responsibility from our community. Contact the Aiken SPCA today to learn how you can participate in our continued success.
We are a non-profit organization operating under IRS Section 501(c)(3). We receive no support from state or federal agencies or from the ASPCA. We depend upon local donations to support our efforts to save the lives of homeless dogs and cats in our community.
Our Board of Directors has undertaken the long -term goal of reducing pet overpopulation in the CSRA by providing affordable Spay and Neuter Surgery and teaching humane values through education.

President, Aiken SPCA
So many times during the year we are asked to contribute our time and or money to help a charitable organization. Fortunately, America is the most charitable nation on Earth, and here in Aiken it seems that we are particularly supportive of our local causes that help people and animals in need.
Many of us serve on the Boards of the nonprofits that are providing community services, crisis centers, free medical clinics, help-lines, shelter for humans or animals, meals on wheels, child advocacy centers and countless other programs that, through compassion, protection, help, and education, make our lives just a little bit better than other parts of the country with the same socioeconomic profiles. As the calendar turns to November, the leaves on the trees start to turn various shades of orange and yellow, making for some beautiful scenery. This is followed by an avalanche of falling leaves soon after, causing me to play the pointless game of trying to rake them all in a pile. After hours spent the day before moving thousands of leaves to the spot where the City of Aiken “claw” can haul them away, I awake to a new batch on my lawn even thicker than the day before. As great a place as South Carolina is to live, there is one thing you notice quickly if you come here from somewhere else: There are a lot of dogs and cats running loose. This has been my regular observation over the past three years, whether I’m in town or exploring another seldom traveled country road. Continue reading Calling animal control can help reunite pets and owners

Aiken SPCA exeutive director
This Friday will mark the third anniversary of my joining the Aiken SPCA; I wanted to take the opportunity to share some thoughts about what I’ve learned in this time and some views about where we hope to be three years from now.
I first heard about this position back in April of 2007. I wasn’t actively looking for a job, as I was happy doing what I was doing in Florida. Somewhere I saw a listing for a director position in Aiken. I honestly had never even heard of Aiken before but I decided to make the 400 mile drive up to Aiken that weekend, and caught the end of the SPCA’s Easter Parade. Everyone looked like they were having fun. Aiken was so different than Florida and it seemed to be somewhere I would love to live. Continue reading Aiken SPCA looks ahead

One of the most difficult challenges in the animal welfare world is dealing with personal surrenders. This is what we call pets whose owner decides to no longer keep them and brings them into a local shelter to give away. Occasionally, a serious life-changing reason is given, such as loss of a job or even their home and the surrender is understandable. However, all too often the pet is brought to a local shelter for reasons that might be fairly easy to overcome, if the owner would seek some guidance or give the pet a little more time.
The result is that a local shelter, often already operating at over capacity, is forced to try and make room for one more dog, cat or horse. For example, the SPCA took in two surrendered horses last week that were underfed and in need of vet care. The horses were surrendered to us because someone’s daughter took up cheerleading and decided she didn’t have time to care for the horses anymore. Continue reading Try to overcome problems before surrendering your pet to a shelter

Whether you have owned pets for years or just adopted your first animal in the past few days, there are some things you need to remember to make the pet’s life as healthy and happy as you want it to be.
* The importance of proper nutrition can’t be overstated. A good quality dog or cat food is vital to your pet’s long-term health. Unlike humans, who may eat a wide variety of foods, your pet is going to eat their dry food or canned food day after day. Providing them with a nutritious food without lots of fillers will allow for good muscle tone, a healthy shiny coat and help them maintain their health. Continue reading Ten things to do that will keep your pet healthy and happy

If you have cats in your home like I do, then you are no stranger to fur balls.
While those may make it a little harder for us to keep our house clean, the second Aiken SPCA Fur Ball is a lot more fun, and the results of the night will do a world of good for the charitable organization and the animals in its care.
The Fur Ball, which will be held on Friday, Oct. 15, is an opportunity for our supporters to come together, dress up a little, enjoy great food and drink and the warm company of a couple hundred of our community’s animal welfare lovers. Continue reading Second SPCA Fur Ball is all about the animals

Four days a week our driveway fills up with people dropping off their dogs and cats to have spay or neuter surgeries. Some are familiar faces that we see from time to time bringing in a new dog or cat that “found” them, and they decided to keep. They know the benefits of spay/neuter so they made an appointment to bring them on in. Continue reading Spaying, neutering animals is a hard sell to some pet owners
