WHAT IS TAEKWONDO?
Tae Kwon Do is action philosphy. It is the Korean art of self-defense. Literally translated, Tae means foot; Kwon means hand; Do means art. It is much more than the image of the martial arts’ physical aspect. It is designed as a nonviolent art and system of complete body exercise as well as being a way of life. It includes physical techniques, mental disciplines, and a deep philosophy. Tae Kwon Do emphasizes practice: physically, mentally, and philosophically.
PHYSICALLY: To develop good coordination, gain strength, increase flexibility, and improve cardiovascular conditioning. From all of these physical practices, a strong body and good health results.
MENTALLY: To build self-confidence, gain better judgement, and improve self-control. From all these mental disciplines, a sound mind results.
PHILOSOPHICALLY: To build true confidence through knowledge in the mind, for better ability to help oneself and others; honesty in the heart, to respect oneself and others; and strength in the body, to live a healthy life. These three aspects allow one to reach success in one’s ultimate goal; to achieve true happiness and build strong friendships with one another to establish a strong and happy community.

A SPECIAL NOTE TO PARENTS
Your child’s progress in Taekwondo is the direct result of a successful partnership between your child, instructors, and you. Our experience in teaching hundreds of children has taught us that you can help your child by treating Taekwondo lessons as a regular part of a daily routine that will, over time, yield positive results. Punishing your child by not taking him/her to class, or by expecting your child to progress at an unrealistic rate, will cause discouragement and frustration. Do not expect overnight changes or improvements. These changes will occur only after much time and commitment, not only from the child, but also from the parent. Parents must remain in control and encourage the child during periods of discouragement when the child wants to quit. Quitting is easy. Taekwondo teaches and instills in the child a “stick with it” attitude that will be invaluable for the rest of life. Please feel free to discuss your child’s progress (tests, problems, etc.) with an instructor.

The Martial Arts have flourished in the United States, due, in part, to Grandmaster Pak’s arrival here from Seoul, Korea in 1977. Through his teachings of TaeKwonDo, a Korean art of bare hands and bare feet, he has motivated thousands of students to achieve academic, moral and physical excellence.
Grandmaster Pak has practiced the Martial Arts for more than 50 years and has achieved the ranks of 9th degree Black Belt in TaeKwonDo, 7th degree Black Belt in Hapkido and 4th degree Black Belt in Kung-Fu. His Martial Arts philosophy calls for Knowledge in the Mind, Honesty in the Heart and Strength in the Body to build True Confidence. As a result of Grandmaster Pak’s teachings, many students have discovered a new self-discipline and self-esteem.
Grandmaster Pak’s many accomplishments include:

President, Southeastern TaeKwonDo Federation
Past President, South Carolina State TaeKwonDo Association
International Master and Instructor of State and National Champions
1988 U.S. Olympic TaeKwonDo Team Delegate

World TaeKwonDo ChungDoKwan Federation
Numerous Awards, Citations and Certificates from Local, State, National and International Agencies for his unselfish, charitable contributions and his leadership in furthering the development and promotion of TaeKwonDo throughout the world.

Respect: We all want it, we all feel we deserve it, but have we all earned it? Respect is the key ingredient to martial arts training. You must believe in yourself to have respect for yourself and for others. Usually the respect will be reciprocated.
If you would like to earn respect from others, here are a few tips on how you can improve your self-respect. The respect you earn will follow.

Be honest with yourself. Always be truthful with what you are saying and about your abilities. Do not listen to your fears or be easily persuaded by others if you know something is wrong. Listen to your instincts and do what is right.
Respect your body. Feed your body with the right foods and plenty of water. Train and exercise every day to keep it fully functional.
A healthy body means a better quality of life.
Respect your emotions. Express your emotions and let them all out. You will feel better and everyone will know how you feel and respect you for it.
Focus on your successes. People that seem to be more successful tend to focus more on their successes and not dwell on their failures. But, do choose to learn from your failures so as not to repeat them.
Set motivating goals. This will give you purpose and help you to focus. Set small, achievable goals that will lead you towards the one huge goal you may have in mind. Have the I can attitude and you will!
Respect your mind. Your mind is the most powerful aspect of your being. Keep it positive and focus on solutions rather than problems. Learn as much as you can about yourself, others and the world, because knowledge is power.
Respect your opinion as well as the opinion of others. Everyone has an opinion, and that means you must trust your own opinion and accept others opinions, even if you may disagree with them.

These are just some simple ways to earn respect from others by earning self-respect. Use these tips when sparring or communicating with your fellow classmates at the Do Jang or in your community. It all starts with you!
