Family of Artists
When Bill and Nancy Rhett decided to open a little gallery on Bay Street in 1981, they didnt know what they were getting into! She was tired of lugging everything up and down the East Coast for exhibits, and he was tired of driving his fragile carvings to New York City twice a year to a gallery there. And they were both tired of trying to work in their in-home studios and then be interrupted to entertain clients at the same time. It was a hassle. So they rented a small space in town, hired a manager, and all was well. Business prospered as Beaufort grew.
By this time, their personal collection of antique maps and natural history prints was bulging, so they put a few for sale in the Gallery, mainly to see if anyone was interested. They were. And this facet of the business began to grow also. Now, the space was too small, so they bought and restored 901 Bay Street, a wonderful old building built in 1884, perfect for a larger Gallery.
As time went on, they made prints from some of Bills Grandfathers work.
JAMES MOORE RHETT (1893 1941) lived and painted all his life in Beaufort. His work, mostly pastels and charcoals, are charmingly nave, almost Oriental in their design. He captured the essence of the Lowcountry with a few simple strokes, a difficult task for most. We are pleased to have been able to reproduce a few of his works that we have inherited.
Bill (WILLIAM MEANS RHETT, JR.) is most noted for his wood sculptures of wildfowl done feather by feather. He has had Place of Honor in the prestigious Easton Waterfowl Festival that is held annually in Maryland; exhibited for years in the Crossroad of Sport in New York City; and has even had his work sold through Sothebys. On occasion he does oil paintings (as he says, every fouteen years or so!) and has had gliclee prints made of his work.
NANCY RICKER RHETT, Bills wife, is a fourth generation artist on her father's side. Primarily a watercolor painter and book illustrator, she occasionally ventures into other media. Currently, she is enthralled with oversize acrylic paintings of Lowcountry scenes and has many prints and giclees available of her paintings. Mainly self-taught, she abstains from competitions, therefore her bio is mercifully short. Her works, however, are worldwide.
WILLIAM MEANS RHETT III, their son, simply decided to start painting in 2002 when he was eighteen, never having done so before (since his kindergarten days). His preference is to paint realistic landscapes and creek scenes in oils, a fifth generation up-and-coming young artist in the family. However, he too is branching out into watercolors and graphite drawings as well.
