Selecting the right mover for the job is the most important decision that you will make. Shop around, but when you compare companies, make sure you get enough information to make a fair and complete comparison. Some states don't have very strict regulations, and it's up to you to protect yourself. Beware of unlicensed, under-insured companies that may put you at greater risk.
Ask about experience, licensing, and insurance coverage. Remember, once a structure is raised from its foundation, your homeowners insurance is void. Make sure your mover has cargo insurance to cover the structure and contents while off the foundation.
Verify the status of the mover's license with the State Department of Transportation. In some states, a license is only required if the move involves public highways. However, if an accident occurs on the job, you can be held liable for deaths, injuries, or property damages if you hire a mover that lacks proper licensing or has inadequate insurance.
Verify that the mover carries a full complement of insurance covering workers, the general public, the property being moved -- and that protects you, the owner.
Make sure premiums for the current period are paid. Insurance carriers are required by law to notify the State Department of Transportation about lapses in a mover's coverage. Recouping damages from an unlicensed, uninsured mover may be difficult, and in some cases, impossible.
Ask about references, and check them.
Ask about the type of equipment and methods used. We are one of the few contractors in the nation to use the unified jacking system. The system is essential when making large, irregular lifts.
