Few adoption attorneys understand your decision to adopt as well as Raymond W. Godwin. In the 1980s, Ray and his wife, Laura, adopted two daughters - one was a private placement through an acquaintance and the other was through an adoption agency. Because of his experience as an adoptive father, Ray has been providing his clients with a unique adoption perspective for more than 20 years.
We understand that the decision to build your family through adoption is life-changing and not without its share of difficulties. By urging couples to pursue their dream of adopting a child and to stand firm despite their fears regarding the process, our office has completed more than 1,500 successful adoptions. Our legal expertise, assertive representation, and availability to answer your questions will help guide you through your adoption journey.

The Miracle of Adoption
Between 500,000 and 1 million couples seek to adopt in the United States every year — approximately 3,000 or more of those reside in South Carolina. Sixty percent of successful adoption efforts are international or private adoptions or are with the participation of the Department of Social Services. Forty percent are step-parent or family adoptions.
Therefore, given those weighty statistics, many couples have been known to contact an adoption agency or their local department of social services only to find waiting lists just to get on other waiting lists. International adoption involves volumes of paperwork, delays and sometimes several trips overseas. This can be discouraging and overwhelming; however, we can help.
We help you get past the often intimidating myths about adoption, such as the conventional wisdom that it will take anywhere from two to five years to be referred to a birth mother. With our many years of assertively and successfully representing adoptive couples, the majority of our adoptive couples obtain a child within one year.
In addition, Ray and his wife, Laura, director of Carolina Hope Christian Adoption Agency, wrote The Complete Adoption Book to help guide families through the adoption process. For more information or to schedule your initial consultation, contact us by phone, fax, or e-mail.
