Cosmeceuticals and more...
There are so many products out there claiming to make us all look younger that it is hard to know which ones to choose. Some are just "hype" and for some there is just not enough hard science behind them to prove their claims. The products Dr. Rosen feels can really make a difference in your appearance are alphahydroxyacids (AHA), Retinoids, TNS Recovery Complex and hydroquinones. Together these products help exfoliate dead skin, reduce the size of pores, even out pigmentation, and promote the growth of new collagen and blood vessels, therefore reducing the appearance of fine lines and improving tone and texture of the skin.
Another product Dr. Rosen recommends is topical Vit C, which helps protect the skin from damage caused by ultraviolet light and free radicals.
Alphahydroxyacids (AHA) - These can be bought "over the counter" or in doctors offices. Many of these products are neutralized or buffered so they do not sting. If this is the case, then the product is useless. We sell products in our office that we know have active acid in them.
Retinoids - There are several different ones out there, but the most effective ones are obtained by prescription such as Retin A. Studies have shown that the use of a topical retinoid not only reverses much of the damage done by ultraviolet light but actually prevents new damage such as the breakdown of collagen caused by ultraviolet light. It is important to still wear a sunblock because retinoids do increase your risk of sunburn.
TNS Recovery Complex - This product contains growth factors. A six month study showing biopsies of the skin done before and after its use showed a 38% increase in epidermal thickness and a 64% increase in Grenz zone collagen. The epidermis is one of the top layers of skin that becomes thinner with aging and Grenz zone collagen is the top layer of collagen in our skin that tends to degenerate from UV damage. By building new collagen this helps erase fine lines. I actually talked my nurse into using this on 1 side of her face only, for 6 months. At the end of the 6 months we could definitely see a difference in the depth of her wrinkles. There is a photo of her results in the photo section. We sell this product in our office.
Hydroquinones - These are what people generally refer to as bleaching creams. They work very well in combination with the above products to fade brown spots and blotches. The most effective Hydroquinones are obtained by prescription.
Topical Vit C - Again there are many of these on the market but the ones with science backing them as effective, are the ones we sell in our office. Vit C actually helps prevent further damage to our skin by offering protection against UV light and free radicals.

DRY SKIN can be a problem during the winter months. To improve this, Dr. Rosen recommends changing your soap to one with minimal detergent such as Sensitive Skin Dove Bar. It is also important to moisturize immediately after bathing to help trap moisture in the skin. There are new ingredients called ceramides that are superior moisturizers. They are in a product called CeraVe lotion or cream and also in Ceratopic which we sell in our office. Dr. Rosen also recommends Kinerase cream or lotion for dry facial skin, which we also sell in our office.

Our office hours are Monday thru Thursday from 8:30am to 5:00pm and on Friday from 9:00am to 12:00pm. To schedule an appointment, please call (843) 723-6529 between the hours of 9 to 12 and 1:30 to 5. Our staff will be pleased to assist you and all efforts will be made to accommodate your schedule.
